The Problem

Food waste and loss are two similar concepts as both of them refer to the amount of food dissipated. Indeed, food loss refers to the decrease in quantity or quality that can occur from the food producer to the retailer.

While food waste focuses more on the rest of the supply chain from the retailer to the consumer, including the consumer itself.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations estimates that “1⁄3 of the food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally, which amounts to about 1.3 billion per year”(2019)INSERT SOURCE. More specifically, 14% of the world’s food is lost from the post-harvest up to, but excluding, the retailer (FAO, 2019)INSERT SOURCE. The food lost after harvesting includes the loss in on-farm activities, storage and transportation.

Almost 30% of it is dissipated during transportation (DBS Bank, 2020).

Our Solution

In Food Peak, we believe that food loss and food waste are both a real problem of so many in the food chain, but in order to make a real impact, we need to focus our full energy in reshaping one part of this complex industry into simple tasks.

Our vision is to provide a solution for the food loss on an essential segment of the supply chain that can be applied to almost all supply chains around the world, by offering a clear, easy-to-use and adaptable system for real-time tracking, cargo monitoring and end-to-end perishables management. By implementing the right technology into the product, it would be easier to acknowledge which merchandise must be sold first and which one last according to the way it is packed and transported to its destination point, and then a great loss of food during the post-harvesting processes can be avoided.

The system we will develop will collect the data necessary to share this information to the buyer and/or supplier and therefore will help to minimize the loss within the storage. Transparency of information will become the most valuable ally to this fight against food loss.

To tackle the problem in its totality, Food Peak offers a great range of services: an accurate collection of data & bills information; precise data for the base of certification, surveys and compliance material; comprehensive analysis to meet regulatory demands; improved AI suggestions on the whole supply chain.
